For Peach, the 13 aircraft on order includes 10 A321neo and 3 A321XLR aircraft.
In addition, ANAHD also finalized options for a total of 15 Boeing aircraft – 5 787-9s announced in February 2020 and 10 737-8 announced on January 2019.
“In anticipation of future growth in passenger demand, including strong inbound demand, ANAHD has decided to proactively introduce competitive, technologically advanced aircraft for sustainable growth over the medium to long term. This will be achieved by renewing the fleet that was suspended due to the COVID-19 and placing additional orders for new aircraft,” ANAHD said in a statement.
International Expansion, Domestic Efficiency
Combined with its current and new aircraft orders, ANAHD reports it expects its fleet to have around 320 aircraft in FY2030 – including 120 787 Dreamliner aircraft. According to ANAHD, the ratio of fuel-efficient aircraft will increase to 91% of its fleet.
“This order will be the catalyst for improving the profitability of domestic flights and the expansion of international flights which is an area of future growth of our airline business,” Koji Shibata, President and CEO, ANA Holdings. “We will fully utilize this opportunity in order to become an industry-leading airline with sustainable growth.”
Already one of the largest operators of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 88 of the widebody jets, ANAHD stated the order for the 18 Boeing 787-9s was made in anticipation of strong Asia-North America demand, and the re-expansion of its hub at Narita International Airport.
Regarding the additional 787s, ANAHD said: “We will build a foundation for sustainable growth by aggressively introducing new aircraft to international routes, which is the growth area of our business. Compared to FY2023, available seat kilometers (ASK) on international routes is expected to increase by approximately 1.5 times in FY2030.”
ANAHD the 787-9s will be equipped with GE engines. The airline group's fleet of 787s include 36 787-8s, 44 787-9s, 8 787-10s.
The additional orders for the A321neos and 12 737 MAX 8s will update the current fleet. While ANA is awaiting the delivery of its first MAX 8, the Tokyo-based airline will have a total of 44 of the next-generation 737 aircraft. 25 A321neos are currently part of ANA's fleet.
For Peach, the 13 new orders will help support the growth of the budget subsidiary of ANA Group. The budget carrier currently has a fleet of nearly 40 narrowbody Airbus A320/A321 family aircraft - including 3 A321neos.
First Japan-based Embraer E190-E2 Operator
As part of the order, ANA will introduce the E190-E2 to Japan with deliveries scheduled in FY2028.
According to ANAHD, ANA aims to achieve fuel-efficiency and noise emission reductions, while reducing operating costs for a flexible supply-demand balance on domestic routes over the medium to long-term using the Brazil-made regional jets.
“We are honoured that Embraer’s E190-E2 small narrowbody aircraft will join ANA’s fleet and we look forward to the delivery of the first aircraft in 2028,” said Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “The E190-E2 is the quietest and most fuel-efficient aircraft available, whose size perfectly complements ANA’s fleet of larger narrowbodies. Furthermore, the E2’s cabin will appeal to ANA’s passengers as it offers outstanding comfort and space with no middle seats. We look forward to seeing the aircraft take to the skies across Japan.”
ANA's order is the third for the E2 with Embraer in Asia, following Singapore Airlines' budget subsidiary Scoot and Air Astana.
