As part of the mergers of Indian conglomerate Tata Group airlines, Air India's CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson stated in a message to employees the AI flight code on Air India Express flights replaces the current IX code used by the budget carrier.
“Air India now designates the ‘AI’ code on Air India Express (IX) operated flights, facilitating AIX to benefit from AI’s global sales and distribution network. This collaboration allows AI to expand its network with nine additional destinations and hundreds of extra frequencies operated by AIX. Customers will also enjoy the convenience of seamless check-in and baggage tagging,” Wilson said.
According to Wilson, Vistara will soon be next to replace its UK flight code with the AI code.
The Tata Group is currently managing the mergers of its airlines – budget carriers AirAsia India-Air India Express and Air India and Vistara. Both mergers are scheduled to be completed within the year.
Among the group's budget carriers, Air Asia India is already operating using the AI flight code.
