Air India has integrated Apple AirTag with its baggage-tracking system and mobile app.

Building upon the baggage tracking feature on its website and mobile app, the Gurugram, India-based airline stated passengers using Apple iPhone, iPad or Mac devices will be access real-time information available to track the location of their baggage.

Using the app, baggage information will become automatically tracked after check-in for those who added their flight to the “My Trips” section. Passengers can also scan the barcode on their baggage receipts to initiate tracking.

Those whose luggage do not make it with them to the destination will be able to report it to Air India staff and share the location link with the airline. The customer will also need to file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) for the lost or delayed baggage.

“The shared AirTag link is then used by Air India’s authorised airport teams to locate the baggage if its within airport premises and reunite the baggage with the guest at the earliest,” the airline said in a statement.

Air India states that the location sharing will automatically end as soon as the guest is reunited with their baggage, automatically after seven days, or by the passenger at any time.

“We are confident that our guests will find the baggage location capability offered using Apple’s AirTag and Share Item Location feature along with Air India’s real-time baggage-tracking system on its website and mobile app quite helpful,” said Dr Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital & Technology Officer, Air India.

According to Air India, it is the first airline in Asia to offer the integrated tracking service for its passengers.
