AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines cancel flights due to Mount Ruang eruption

- 1355H Jakarta Time (April 18) - Flights to and from nine airports including Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and Brunei will be affected by the cancellation starting today, 18 April 2024 at 10:00 am until 19 April 2024 at 8:00 am.

Due to the recent eruption of Mount Ruang, AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines have announced the cancellation of flights to/from Eastern Malaysia. 


In a release, AirAsia Malaysia announced 16 flights have been cancelled on April 18. Among the flights that have been cancelled include services from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu to Tawau. 


AirAsia is continuing to monitor Mount Ruang volcanic activity and will provide more information on the latest developments,” the airline said in a statement. 


Malaysia Airlines reported 19 flights to Sarawak and Sabah have been cancelled. 


In a post on X, among the flights cancelled include services from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Miri, Bintulu, and Kuching.


Given the evolving situation, Malaysia Airlines will continue to closely monitor developments. Further updates regarding flight cancellations will be updated here and communicated directly to affected customers,” Malaysia Airlines said in the post. 


Located in the Sangihe Islands north of Indonesia's North Sulawesi province. According to reports from outlets such as the Jakarta Post, the first eruption was recorded on the evening of April 17 followed by two more the following morning (April 18).
