AirAsia Thailand is expanding its flights to Okinawa, Japan with an additional daily flight via Hong Kong.

The Thailand-based AirAsia subsidiary announced the new Bangkok Don Mueang-Hong Kong-Naha (Okinawa) route will start on June 1. Operating daily using Airbus A320 aircraft, the new service will include the airline's first Fifth Freedom route via Hong Kong.

Currently operating a four-times weekly direct service from Don Mueang and another daily Fifth Freedom flight from Don Mueang via Taipei Taoyuan, AirAsia Thailand will offer a total of 18 weekly flights to the largest airport of the southern Japanese island during the summer.

According to AirAsia Thailand's Chief Executive Officer Santisuk Klongchaiya, the new Hong Kong-Naha service will serve the travel market between Hong Kong and Japan where the airline has seen an increase in demand. Okinawa is among the top 5 most visited destinations in Japan by Hong Kong residents.

“Expanding our route network through Fifth Freedom rights is a key strategy for growth and increasing regional connectivity across Asia. Following our success last year connecting Japan via Taipei and Kaohsiung, we are now building on that momentum with Hong Kong as our latest transit point. We are confident that this route will receive strong support from the market,” Santisuk said.

AirAsia Thailand will be the third airline and the second budget airline to operate flights between Hong Kong and Okinawa. Hong Kong Airlines and budget carrier HK Express are the two airlines currently operating flights on the route.
