AirAsia's long haul arm AirAsia X will launch a new route to Karachi, Pakistan this summer.

Starting May 30, AirAsia X will operate four weekly flights (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday) between its hub at Kuala Lumpur and Karachi.

According to AirAsia, the new route will enhance affordable connectivity between the two nations, allowing Malaysian travellers and the Pakistani community in Malaysia to fly home affordably. The flights will also provide a direct air link from Pakistan to Malaysia and the rest of ASEAN.

“Karachi is a dynamic city with a rich history and a thriving modern economy, and we are proud to be the sole low-cost carrier connecting this vibrant metropolis to our extensive network beyond Malaysia. This route will also open up hundreds of seamless connectivity options for travellers to key markets such as Australia, China, Thailand, and more via our Fly-Thru services,” said Benyamin Ismail, CEO, AirAsia X.

Ismail added the airline expects to carry more than 100,000 passengers per year on the new route.

AirAsia X will be the lone budget carrier offering flights between Kuala Lumpur and Karachi. Between Malaysia and Pakistan, Batik Air is currently operates flights from Kuala Lumpur to both Karachi and Lahore. Pakistan International Airlines operates flights from Kuala Lumpur to Lahore.

With the addition of Karachi, AirAsia X's network now covers 22 destinations.
