According to initial reports from various news outlets and footage on social media, 7C2216 – a Boeing 737-800 (registration HL8088) – with 181 passengers and crew collided with a wall at the end of the runway after attempting to land without its landing gear deployed.


7C2216 was operating from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to Muan in the southern South Korean province of South Jeolla. Of the 181 people on board (175 passengers and 6 crew members), two survivors – both crew members – have been reported.


Operations at Muan Airport has been temporarily suspended for the accident investigation.


HL8088 was a 15-year old Boeing 737-800. First delivered to Ryanair in 2009, Jeju Air acquired the aircraft through lease from SMBC Aviation Capital in 2017. Prior to the incident, the same aircraft was reported to have experienced a flight diversion to Beijing while enroute from Jeju to Beijing on December 27.


Following the incident, Jeju Air issued an apology for the accident on its website saying: “We deeply apologize to all those affected by the incident. We will make every effort to resolve the situation. We sincerely regret the distress caused.”
