Batik Air Malaysia announced it will resume its flights between Subang Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport near Kuala Lumpur and Penang with the introduction of jet aircraft on the route.

The Malaysia-based Lion Air Group carrier announced the resumption of the Subang-Penang route will take place on August 1. Operating thrice-weekly, the airline will use Boeing 737-8 (MAX 8) aircraft on the route which it previously used ATR turboprop aircraft. The flights will be increased to daily from August 15.

“The convenience of Subang, combined with the appeal of Penang, creates an ideal synergy that benefits both business and leisure travellers,” said Batik Air Chief Executive Officer Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy. “We anticipate a strong response and are prepared to increase the flight frequency to daily to meet passenger needs.”

Following Penang, Datuk Chandran said Batik Air will introduce more flights from Subang with planned routes to Kota Bharu, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching.

Subang Airport previously served as the main international air hub for Kuala Lumpur before the opening of Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang in 1998. Currently serving turboprop aircraft operations, airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad stated Subang Airport will be opened for jet aircraft operations in August.

Batik Air Malaysia is the third airline to confirm the launch of new flights with jet aircraft at Subang Airport starting this August. Indonesian airline TransNusa announced it will operate flights between Jakarta and Subang with Airbus A320 aircraft from August 1. Singapore Airlines' budget subsidiary Scoot will start flights to Subang from Singapore Changi Airport with Airbus A320 aircraft from September 1.
