As the world celebrated the arrival of the new year, China Eastern operated the first passenger flight using its COMAC C919 to Hong Kong – the first point outside of Mainland China for the Chinese-made aircraft.

On January 1, China Eastern MU721 – a C919 with the registration B-657T – departed Shanghai Hongquiao International Airport with 157 passengers in the morning before arriving at Hong Kong – a Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR) - a few hours later.

In addition to being the first point outside of Mainland China to see the operation of regularly scheduled passenger flights with the C919, China Eastern now uses the aircraft on flights to nine cities. The Shanghai-based airline previously operated a charter flight between Shanghai and Hong Kong in June 2024.

"Sharing similar cultures, Shanghai and Hong Kong are both international centers for finance, trade and shipping. The two cities have a long history of exchanges and economic cooperation. The new daily flight of the C919 is expected to better showcase China's capability in manufacturing and services by offering more diversified travel options," Liu Tiexiang, General Manager, China Eastern Air Holdings, was quoted saying in a report from the China Daily.

The C919 is currently in service with the big three Chinese airlines – Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern.
