China Southern will resume its flights to Perth, Western Australia before year's end.
Announced by Perth Airport, the Guangzhou-based carrier will reconnect Western Australia with mainland China with the Guangzhou-Perth route from November 28. With a three-times weekly schedule, China Southern will use Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the route.
According to Perth Airports, the route resumption will provide a significant boost to tourism and trade between China and Western Australia. China is the Australian state's fourth biggest market for tourists with 54,000 visitors in 2023. The three-times weekly service will provide 86,000 seats and 5,000 tonnes of cargo capacity to Perth.
“Fresh produce, business and leisure tourism are all key export focus areas and a direct link between China and Perth will undoubtedly further connect Western Australia and benefit the entire economy,” said Perth Airport's Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer Kate Holsgrove.
First launched in 2011, the Guangzhou-Perth route was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, the airline served 47,900 passengers traveling to Perth.
“China Southern Airlines is highly attentive to the recovery of the China-Australia market and the preparations for the resumption of the Perth route in the post-pandemic period,” said Jason Sun, Regional General Manager Australia & NZ, China Southern. “With this resumption, China Southern Airlines aims to strengthen the cooperation with the Western Australian government and Perth Airport, continuously enhancing the "Canton Route" and bringing more passengers from around the world to facilitate China-Australia exchanges.”
China Southern will add to the flight services between mainland China and Perth. Shanghai-based China Eastern offers seasonal flights to Perth from Shanghai-Pudong. In addition, Cathay Pacific offers flights to/from Hong Kong.
Perth will be the fourth city on China Southern's network in Australia, where it currently operates flights to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
