Etihad Airways has announced a new Joint Venture (JV) with Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian), which will also see both carriers launch new flights between their hubs at Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa.
Subject to regulatory approvals, the new JV aims to expand connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Both carriers will enable both Etihad and Ethiopian to collaborate in developing and expanding routes between the UAE and Ethiopia, frequent flyer programs and benefits, and in other business activities.
As part of the new JV, Ethopian Airlines will launch its Addis Ababa-Abu Dhabi flights on July 15. Etihad will follow with its own daily flights on the route from October 1.
In a statement, Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer, Etihad said: “This Joint Venture is great news for customers of both airlines. The start of flights between the two great cities of Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabi connects our expanding networks, giving our customers seamless access to a growing list of destinations via our extensive hubs. It also paves the way for deeper discussions on working together across our respective regions on other cooperation, including frequent flyer programmes, training and cargo.
Mesfin Tasew, CEO, Ethiopian Airlines Group added: “We are delighted to enter into this strategic agreement with Etihad Airways. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. By leveraging our combined networks, we are committed to providing our passengers with greater travel convenience and exceptional service. This partnership underscores our dedication to fostering strong bilateral relations and promoting economic growth between Ethiopia and the UAE.”
With the new route to Abu Dhabi, Ethiopian will operate flights to three destinations in the UAE including Dubai and Sharjah (cargo only).
Addis Ababa will be the 15th destination Etihad will add to its network in 2025. The airline is adding routes across its network to cities including Atlanta, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Taipei, Prague, Warsaw, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Sochi, and Phnom Penh.
