Malaysia Airlines sister airline Firefly has announced it will launch flights with jet aircraft from Subang  Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport near Kuala Lumpur late next month.

From August 29, the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) subsidiary will launch daily flights each from Subang to both Penang and Kota Kinabalu using its Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 189 all-Economy seats.

The flights with the 737 aircraft will add to Firefly's operations at Subang Airport where it has served since 2008. Currently using turboprop aircraft, the airline operates over 2,100 flights to eight destinations from Subang – including an international route to Singapore's smaller Seletar Airport.

Between Subang and Penang, Firefly currently operates nine daily flights using ATR 72 turboprop aircraft. The new flights with the 737 aircraft will bring the total number of daily flights to 10 on the route.

Firefly's introduction of jet operations from Subang represents a strategic enhancement to our network, complementing our existing ATR72 turboprop services and ensuring uninterrupted connectivity,” saidDatuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG). “We want to reassure passengers that our current ATR72 schedules will remain unaffected. This initiative highlights MAG’S commitment to expanding travel options and strengthening connectivity across our network.”

Four other airlines have announced their plans to operate flights with jet aircraft to/from Subang starting next month. Indonesia-based TransNusa will launch daily flights with Airbus A320 aircraft to Jakata from Subang on August 1. The same day, Malaysia-based Lion Air Group carrier Batik Air Malaysia will launch thrice-weekly flights from Subang to Penang with Boeing 737-8 aircraft. AirAsia will operate flights from Subang to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu starting August 30. Singapore Airlines' budget subsidiary Scoot will start flights to Subang from Singapore Changi Airport with Airbus A320 aircraft from September 1.
