Fukuoka Airport – Japan's third busiest airport – is opening its new second runway today (March 20, 2025).

The new runway – located between the current parallel 2800m runway  and the international passenger terminal – has a length of around 2,500m and width of 60m. With a project cost of around JPY 164.3 billion (~USD $1.1 billion), the runway is expected to boost the capacity of the airport by just two flights per hour – to 40.

According to a report by NHK, while using the two runways, dual-use – simultaneous take-off and landings – will be difficult due to the close proximity to the parallel runway (210m west of the existing runway). The runway will primarily be used for international departures.

Considered Japan's most congested airport with just one runway, Fukuoka Airport served more than 24 million passengers in 2023. The airport – the largest on the Japanese island of Kyushu – is the fourth busiest in the Japan.
