The operator of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) – Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) – will invest CNY 4.3 billion (~USD $593.4 million) to acquire a 35% stake in Zhuhai Airport.
Both AAHK and Zhuhai Transportation Holdings Group signed an Agreement of Shares Acquisition in an event attended by government officials of both cities. Under the agreement, AAHK will promote further cooperation between HKIA and Zhuhai Airport – both located in China's Greater Bay Area (GBA).
The agreement will expand the partnership between AAHK and the Zhuhai Municipal Government – first started in 2006 – for the management of Zhuhai Airport. Hong Kong-Zhuhai Airport Management Company Limited – a subsidiary of AAHK – will extend its management rights for the operation and management of Zhuhai Airport to 2046.
Among the collaborations HKIA and Zhuhai Airport have started include the “Fly-Via-Zhuhai-HK” service which offers direct-to-gate transfer services between HKIA and Zhuhai Airport. Launched in December 2023, the service enables passengers from cities in Mainland China to fly into Zhuhai Airport, take a bus transfer via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to the SkyPier Terminal inside the restricted area of HKIA for flight boarding.
“Thank to the strong support of the Central Government and Guangdong Provincial Government, the Hong Kong and Zhuhai airports have been deepening our cooperation,” said Fred Lam, Chairman, AAHK. “With AAHK’s acquisition of shares in Zhuhai Airport, we will further capitalise on strengths of the two airports by leveraging the convenience brought by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. This will not only bring more passenger and cargo traffic to Zhuhai Airport, but also enables travellers from Zhuhai and other cities in the western part of the GBA to enjoy the global connectivity provided by HKIA’s extensive aviation network, achieving mutual benefits.”
Zhuhai Airport handled over 11 million passengers in 2023, making it the 35thbusiest in Mainland China. It is the third in China's Guandong Province, behind Guangzhou Baiyun and Shenzhen Bao'an.
