IndiGo has announced it will introduce widebody jets to its fleet for the first time with an order for Airbus A350s.

In a statement, the Indian budget carrier stated it will take on 30 firm orders for A350-900s equipped with Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines. In addition, the airline has purchase rights for an additional 70 A350 family aircraft.

According to IndiGo, deliveries of the A350s are expected to start in 2027 with the exact configuration of the aircraft to be decided at a later date.

“Today’s historic moment marks a new chapter for IndiGo and will further shape the future of the airline and for Indian aviation at the same time,” said Peter Elbers, CEO, IndiGo. “For IndiGo, after successfully pioneering the Indian skies with an unprecedented journey, its fleet of 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft will allow IndiGo to embark on its next phase of becoming one of the leading global aviation players.”

Currently with a fleet of over 350 all-Airbus aircraft, the new widebody jet order will add to its orderbook of nearly 1000 A320 family aircraft – including A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLRs - to be delivered over the next decade.

The new order will also follow IndiGo's own record aircraft order for 500 jets with Airbus made in June 2023.

IndiGo will become the second A350 operator in India. Air India currently has four A350-900s in its fleet.
