To support its plans to open new long-haul routes, IndiGo will wet lease a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways.
In the damp lease agreement, Norse Atlantic will lease its aircraft – along with pilots, flight crew, and maintenance services to IndiGo – with the purpose to help IndiGo launch long-haul routes from India starting in March 2025.
According to Norse Atlantic, the initial term of the agreement – signed on February 6, 2025 - is for six months which can be extended up to 18 months subject to regulatory approvals.
"As part of our broader strategy to significantly expand our international network, we are pleased to confirm this damp lease of one Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways. Our vision is to transform into a global player by 2030 while having strong roots and continuous expansion in India, and we are strategically moving ahead in that direction," said Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo.
Norse Atlantic previously disclosed in a stock exchange announcement on November 29, 2024 the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with IndiGo – which was previously unnamed and referred to as a “reputable international airline” for wet lease agreements for six aircraft.
The commercial terms of the wet lease agreement for one aircraft are in line with what was communicated by the Company in the announcement of the LOI on 29 November 2024,” Norse Atlantic said in its statement.
IndiGo has been previously reported by local Indian and international news outlets such as Reuters and The Hindustan Times to have plans to launch flights from India to destinations in Europe. Currently operating flights to 38 international destinations, IndiGo is awaiting orders for aircraft to support its long-haul flight plans including Airbus A321XLR and widebody A350-900 aircraft. The airline expects to receive its first A350 in 2027.
