Three major international gateways to Japan – including the two Tokyo area hubs of Haneda and Narita, along with Osaka Kansai International Airport – will introduce new integrated kiosks that will enable travelers to clear immigration and customs checks simultaneously.
Announced by the Japan's Ministry of Finance Customs and the Immigration Services Agency (Immigration Bureau), the “joint kiosks” is part of efforts to streamline border control measures by allowing arriving travelers to submit information for immigration and customs once during the entry process.
The new kiosks will be available at both terminals at Osaka Kansai International Airport and Tokyo Haneda Airport Terminal 2 from April 1. The system will then be open at Narita Airport from April 7 before being expanded to Haneda Airport Terminal 3 on April 11.
According to the Immigration Bureau, the shared kiosks have been deployed as part of a trial run at Haneda Airport. Both agencies stated the kiosks will eventually be introduced at all airports in the country with international flights.
To use the one-stop joint kiosks, travelers must first register in advance to obtain a QR code containing immigration and customs declaration details via the Japanese government's Visit Japan Web platform. Upon arrival, travelers will be able to scan their QR code and passport on the kiosk.
Foreign passport holders visiting the country will have their faces photographed and fingerprints taken, and their documents will be inspected by immigration officials. Japanese citizens will have their photo taken before being able to proceed.
