Malaysia Airlines' dedicated Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage operator Amal announced it recently launched its first flight from Johor Bahru, Malaysia to Madinah – the first direct flight of the airline to Saudi Arabia from a city outside of Kuala Lumpur.

According to the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) carrier, the first flight departed Johor Bahru's Senai International Airport as MH162 to Madinah Prince Mohammad bin Adulaziz International Airport before noon on July 23 (Tuesday). Amal will also operate a once-weekly flight (MH155) - from Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport to Johor Bahru every Monday. Both flights will use Airbus A330-200 aircraft with 284 seats – (18 Business and 265 Economy).
In addition to facilitating travel for Umrah pilgrims and travelers from Johor Bahru – located just north of Singapore - Amal stated the new route will open new opportunities for business professionals and travelers from neighboring regions such as Batam, Sabah, Sarawak – to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
“We are thrilled to introduce this direct flight from Johor Bahru to Madinah, as well as from Jeddah to Johor Bahru, which will provide convenience for pilgrims from the southern region of Malaysia, as well as those travelling from Singapore and Indonesian cities such as Batam, Bintan, and Riau,” said Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines from MAG. “This service demonstrates our commitment to providing convenient and comfortable travel options for our valued pilgrims, and we look forward to continuing our mission of supporting the religious and spiritual needs of our community.”
Speaking on Amal's announcement, Kennedy Ayu, CEO of Senai Airport's operator Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATSSB) highlighted how the new flights will open new travel opportunities for those living in Johor Bahru and the surrounding areas to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
“The flight not only facilitates Umrah pilgrims and travellers from Johor Bahru, but it also opens new opportunities for business professionals and travellers from neighbouring regions, such as Batam, Sabah, and Sarawak. This new route also introduces Johor Bahru to the Middle Eastern market, showcasing the city's attractions, including theme parks, shopping malls, local delicacies, and beautiful beaches,” said Ayu.
Ayu added with the new flights, Senai International Airport's network will now cover 19 destinations.
Launched in 2019, Amal – a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group – operates regularly scheduled and charter flights for those taking part in the Muslim tradition of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage.
