Malaysia Airlines and China Southern have announced the expansion of their codeshare partnership to include additional routes between Malaysia and China.


The Malaysian flag carrier and the Guangzhou-based carrier announced their expanded partnership will cover three more codeshare routes – Guangzhou-Penang, Kuala Lumpur to Beijing Daxing, and Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai Pudong. The three routes adds to the previously launched codeshare flights between Guangzhou and Kuala Lumpur which started in July 2023.


In a statement, Zhang Dongsheng, Deputy Director General of the Commercial Steering Committee and Senior Vice President of the Marketing Division, China Southern Airlines said: “Under the framework of the "Belt and Road" initiative, China Southern Airlines will continue to leverage its network advantages to explore new opportunities with Malaysia Airlines, and deepen our cooperation in more fields, aiming to bring greater air travel experience for all passengers." 


Ahmad Luqman Mod Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), added the benefits for travelers between Malaysia and China with the current visa-free policies for citizens of both countries. 


“This is especially beneficial with the current visa-free policy for Malaysian  & Chinese travellers to travel between the two countries, making it easier than ever to discover and appreciate the rich cultures and attractions they have to offer."


Both carriers plan to operate a combined 127 flights between Malaysia and Mainland China. China Southern plans to increase its flights to 73 weekly to Malaysia, while Malaysia Airlines operates 54 weekly flights to four points – Guangzhou, Shanghai Pudong, Beijing Daxing, and Xiamen.
