Malaysia Airlines will progressively increase its flights to Melbourne to three-times per day by the year's end.

According to Melbourne Airport, the Malaysian flag carrier will start operating two extra weekly flights in addition to the current twice-daily services (combined: 14 to 16 times weekly) from August 29. The same additional flight will then be increased by another two weekly flights from September 29 (four-times weekly, combined: 18 times weekly) before going daily (combined: 21 weekly) from October 30.

On Malaysia Airlines' website, the extra third flight between Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne is listed as MH147 which will depart at 2030H and arrive at Melbourne the following morning at 0615H. The return flight – MH146 – will depart at 0745H arriving back in Kuala Lumpur at 1430H in the afternoon.

MH147/MH146 will be operated using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, though Melbourne Airport states the airline will use its A330-900 (A330neo) on all flights to the city before the end of the year.

The new flights are expected to boost the capacity on flights between Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur by an extra 216,000 seats per year.

“Malaysia Airlines has been serving Victoria for decades, and this capacity increase underscores the airline’s ongoing commitment to our city and state,” said Lorie Argus, Chief Executive Officer, Melbourne Airport.

Currently operating flights to Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne, Malaysia Airlines recently announced it will resume flights to Brisbane on November 29. Sydney Airport also announced the Malaysian flag carrier will also add a third daily flight to the city from August 30.

Between Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne, Malaysia Airlines operates two daily flights. Of the two daily flights, one return service – MH149/MH148 – is operated with an A330neo.
