Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has announced an order for 30 more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has announced an order for 30 more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
As part of its fleet modernization strategy, the order for the 30 737 MAX aircraft includes 18 737-8 (MAX 8) and 12 higher capacity 737-10 (MAX 10). MAG will also have options for 30 more 737 aircraft. All aircraft ordered will be equipped with CFM International LEAP-1B engines.
According to Boeing, the order was placed in January 2025 and posted as “unidentified” on the aircraft manufacturer's orders and deliveries website.
The new order will add to MAG's existing order for 25 -8s through a long-term lease with Air Lease Corporation - 11 of the aircraft have already been delivered with the rest to be delivered through 2027. The 737 MAX aircraft will help MAG phase out the older generation 737-800 aircraft operated by Malaysia Airlines. Once all are delivered, the Malaysian flag carrier will have a fleet of 55 MAX jets by 2030.
Of the 113 aircraft in MAG's fleet, Malaysia Airlines operates 42 737-800s while Firefly operates 5.
Speaking on the new aircraft order, MAG Group Managing Director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail highlighted the history of the Boeing 737 and the airline group's history and how the MAX jets will continue to be a part of its future fleet.
“The Boeing 737 has been a cornerstone of our fleet since 1969, with the introduction of the first 737-100 during the Malaysia-Singapore Airlines era. It has since played a vital role in supporting the growth of our national airline,” Izham said. “The selection of the 737-8 and 737-10 reflects a careful evaluation of our long-term growth strategy, ensuring we have the right aircraft to meet evolving market demands. These next-generation aircraft offer greater fuel efficiency, extended range, and enhanced passenger comfort. By balancing operational needs with an elevated travel experience, we are strengthening our commitment to delivering a seamless and enjoyable journey for our passengers.”
Izham added: “This investment represents a bold step in securing MAG’s future, enhancing our ability to respond to market opportunities, drive greater value across our operations, and support the broader aviation ecosystem. It also enables us to future-proof our fleet, ensuring we remain competitive, adaptable, and well-positioned for sustainable growth.”
