To carry out pre-monsoon maintenance work, Mumbai's airport will close two runways for six hours on May 9.

Announced by airport operator Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the two runways at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) – 9/27 and 14/32 – will be closed between 11AM to 5PM on May 9 for the maintenance and repair work.

Ahead of the monsoon season and the requirement, a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued back in December for airlines to plan flight scheduling ahead of time.

"Hence, maintenance and repair work of the runway will not impact any flight movement or cause inconvenience to its passengers," the airport operator said in a statement.

The CSMIA stated the scheduled temporary runway closure is a yearly practice as part of its monsoon preparedness strategy. The maintenance work includes the inspection of the runway surface followed by the strengthening of the airside strip.

The airport has advised passengers to check their respective airlines regarding their scheduled flights.
