The operator of Narita Airport has reported jet fuel shortages at airports experienced in Japan has affected nearly 60 flights at the Tokyo-area air hub.

According to the Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA), the fuel shortage situation has affected the ability for six unnamed Asia-based carriers to expand and launch a total of around 57 weekly flights to the Narita Airport.

"We need to increase fuel suppliers and have requested the government and distributors to directly receive fuel from overseas as well,” said Akihiko Tamura, the chief executive officer of Narita International Airport.

Tamura added the Narita Airport has "requested domestic distributors ensure a stable supply.” However, he added they "haven’t been able to increase volumes sufficiently.”

In an effort to address the problem, Eneos Holdings – Japan's largest oil refiner – has been communicating with airlines and the government. However, the company has reported problems such as labor shortages at airports and logistical bottlenecks to bring the jet fuel to airports.

According to the NAA, the Narita Airport saw a 27% increase in passenger traffic in May compared to the same month the previous year as it served 3.3 million passengers.
