The operator of Osaka Itami Airport has announced it will introduce a new fee for delayed flights that land or take off beyond the airport's operating hours.
Announced by airport operator Kansai Airports on March 25, the new fee – called a “Night-time noise control charge” will take into effect April 1. Collected from the airline, the new fee will be charged to airlines whose flights arrive or depart beyond the airport's operating hours due to unavoidable reasons not attributable to the airline.
Kansai Airports stated the charge will be equivalent to twice the landing charge and collected separately. The collected charges will be used for projects aimed at improving the living environment in the areas surrounding the airport.
Due to its proximity to residential areas, Itami Airport has implemented noise reduction measures which includes a restriction of aircraft operations after 9:00PM (2100H).
Located around 15 kilometers from the center of Osaka, Itami Airport is one of the two main air hubs of the city and the Kansai region. While Kansai International Airport is the main international air hub to the city, Itami primarily serves domestic flights. According to KN Aviation, around 15 million passengers traveled through Itami in 2023.
