The cargo divisions of Qatar Airways and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) are enhancing their partnership with a new Joint Cargo Business Partnership.
Qatar Airways Cargo and MASkargo – the cargo airline and subsidiary of MAG – have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deliver an enhanced product offering to cargo customers and help achieve operational synergies.
Under the agreement, both cargo airlines will leverage each network's network strengths and fleet capacity to increase cargo offerings. MASkargo customers will have access to Qatar Airways Cargo's global network, while Qatar Airways Cargo customers will have access to the Asia-Pacific market. Both carriers will use their hubs at Doha's Hamad International Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport as strategic hubs to serve the combined network.
From Kuala Lumpur, MASkargo operates a fleet of three Airbus A330-200F freighters. The airline also uses the belly-hold capacity of Malaysia Airlines' aircraft for cargo purposes.
Qatar Airways Cargo operates a fleet of 20 Boeing 777 Freighters along with Qatar Airways' passenger aircraft serving 240 destinations worldwide – 70 freight and 170 passenger. The cargo carrier will be the launch carrier of the Boeing 777-8 Freighter.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “Our new MoU with Malaysia Aviation Group is testament to our deepening relations with Malaysia and the integral APAC market. This strategic cooperation with our oneworld partner will serve to link our freighter and belly-hold networks with our cargo product offering and capacity, allowing us to further cement our relationship and foster the close links between our airlines.”
Malaysia Aviation Group's Group Managing Director, Captain Izham Ismail, said: “Expanding our partnership with Qatar Airways Cargo marks a significant milestone for MASkargo. This collaboration will not only enhance our product offering and operational capabilities but also solidify our position in the global cargo market. By leveraging each other's strengths, we are poised to deliver unparalleled service to our customers and achieve remarkable growth together.”
The two oneworld member airlines launched their codeshare cooperation in 2004. Since its launch, the Qatar Airways-Malaysia Airlines codeshare partnership covers 62 destinations in Malaysia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Both carriers signed an MoU in 2022 to strengthen their passenger airline partnership.
