The groundbreaking for the Terminal 5 (T5) project at Singapore Changi Airport will take place next year.
During a recent dinner celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated the groundbreaking for T5 will take place during the first half of 2025.
“We will break ground for the construction of T5 in the first half of next year,” said Wong. “And T5 will add capacity for another 50 million passengers each year, on top of Changi’s current capacity of 90 million. So it will support more connectivity, transform the passenger experience, and create more jobs.”
Located east of the current airport facilities in an area known as Changi East, the T5 project is the biggest expansion project in the airport's history. Covering 180 hectares – nearly the same size as the existing airport – T5 will feature three-runways and a passenger terminal that can be divided into sub-terminals. The third runway has since been opened and has been used during airport operations.
T5 was first announced in 2013. The project has since been updated taking into account the experiences of the operator Changi Airport Group's experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.
PM Wong further stated the Singapore government is working to further liberalize the country's air services agreements to promote more flights and expand Changi Airport's network. Currently with 150 destinations, Singapore aims to grow the network to over 200 destinations by the mid-2030s.
“This will bring more passengers to Changi and Singapore, and create demand for the services of our broader aviation ecosystem,” Wong added.
