After a three-year absence, Vietnam Airlines will relaunch direct flights between Hanoi and Moscow, Russia.

From May 8, the Vietnamese flag carrier announced it will operate two weekly flights (Tuesday and Thursday) between Hanoi and Moscow using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Services will then be increased to three weekly flights from July 2026.

According to Vietnam Airlines' website, the flights will arrive/depart Moscow at Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO).

Vietnam Airlines previously operated flights between Hanoi and Moscow in March 2022. The direct air link was suspended due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The addition of the Hanoi-Moscow service will serve the inbound tourism market in Vietnam from Russia. One of Vietnam's key markets, the Russian Union of Travel Industry press service reported that tourism to the Southeast Asian nation from Russia increased by 85% in 2024. During the previous year (2024), 232,000 Russian tourists visited Vietnam. Far lower than the pre-pandemic levels (600,000 visitors in 2019), a return to the same visitor numbers has been limited due to the availability of direct flights between the two countries.

Vietnam Airlines' move to resume flights to Moscow is part of its expansion strategy where it plans to relaunch flights to 15 international destinations this year. Other countries that the airline is planning to launch flights to this year include Italy, Russia, Denmark, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea (South Korea), and the UAE (United Arab Emirates).
